Animation is one of the major advancements of cinema in general, because it allows for an addition of style and fantastical sets to the otherwise plain structure of cinema. Nowadays, animation and 3D rendering has become an essential part of almost every movie, but true animation is showcased in separate, entirely animated films.

Needless to say, animation too has progressed over time , having various different techniques. Starting from stop motion or clay animation, which is basically taking multiple shots of clay models , which’s shape is changed by hand (examples include Wallace and Gromit and Corpse Bride) , moving on to regular 2D animation made by taking photographs of pre-made pictures, and the now obsolete drawing directly on film.

The type of animation which is closest to us in time , however, is called CG or computer generated. I’m sure you can think of many and different movies from that genre, but here are the top 10  computer generated movies:

10.  Up ! (2009)

Up is an animation by Pixar which tells the story of an old cranky man who had always dreamed of adventure and an exciting new world , and wanted to embark on this adventure alone, but happens to be stuck with an annoying little kid by accident. It’s an exciting movie which discussed various issues of people’s lives.

9.  Bolt (2008)

This movie, made by Disney studios, although a little bit simplistic, is still great and exciting. It tells the story of a young dog named Bolt, which was a star in a Hollywood movie, and is deceived that he actually has superpowers. By mistakenly getting to New York, Bolt starts his journey.

8.  Surf’s Up (2007)

Surf’s Up is a classical competition and coming of age movie, which tells the story of the young penguin surfer Cody Maverick and his dream of becoming one of the best surfers in memory of Big Z, a legendary deceased surfer. Once again , a movie targeted at children which can still be fun to watch for any ages.

7.  Cars (2006)

This movie uses anthropomorphic (human-like) cars to convey the emotions and characters in the movie. It’s a movie that shows many good qualities people should have through cars, which makes it entertaining for the younger audiences , and is also full of puns for the more mature.

6. Wall-E (2008)

Wall-E shows a very grim future for a movie of its genre. It’s concerned with a near-future Earth, who has become impossible to live on because  of the incredible amounts of trash piled upon it. A robot, WALL-E , is Earth’s last inhabitant, along with a pet cockroach,  and he’s there to collect and order trash. A somewhat deeper movie, it’s still fun to watch.

5.  Open Season (2006)

Open season is about a domesticated bear, which finds itself in the woods 3 days before the hunting season starts.  The bear tries to form an alliance with the other forest animals in order to fight back and repel the hunters.

4.  Finding Nemo (2003)

A story about what a father would do to find his son , set in an ocean near the coral reefs of Australia, Finding Nemo is a thrilling adventure with great jokes and lots of humor and adventure. It’s one of the pioneering movies of the genre.

3. Toy Story (1995)

Toy Story,  nominated for 3 Oscar awards, is one of the truly fascinating and thrilling CG movies that shaped the industry.  It was released in 1995 , and since then has sold millions of DVD’s , made a sequel and has been into two generations of kid’s favorite movies.

2. Shrek (2001)

One of the greatest movies ever to be released, Shrek is a fairytale with anachronisms,  told in a CG animation about the swamp monster Shrek and his journey to retrieve his swamp, accompanied by the annoying Donkey, voiced by none other than the famous Eddie Murphy.

1.Ice Age (2002)

A masterpiece of CG animation, Ice Age has one of the most thrilling character designs  , intriguing plotline and picturesque setting. Set in the Ice Age in the adventure of several prehistoric animals, it’s one of the best animations to ever come out.
