Top 5 Mind Blowing Documentaries

Most of the viewers of modern cinema and television are primarily concerned with their entertainment.  In this day and age , it’s most important for people to see action , visual effects, lots of shooting and explosions rather than good solid fact. That means a certain genre of films is getting less and less popular, and that genre is documentaries.

Documentaries are movies made to explore a certain topic to the maximum extent. They require lots of research to acquire the interesting information , and also lots of talent and expenses to present it in a way that will fascinate the viewer.

There are lots of documentaries, but here are some of the most controversial and breath taking ones, the ones that make you seriously rethink the way you live and how you value things in your life :

  1. Zeitgeist

Zeitgeist (in direct translation “Spirit of Time”) is a documentary made by director Peter Joseph in 2007, and is concerned with the origins of Christianity, the negative impact of religion in the daily life of people in the modern world, as well as those in the past. Zeitgeist brings logical arguments to the matter, and also presents a shocking, but plausible theory about the attacks of 9/11. According to the director, the American government is likely to have pulled off the same trick Hitler did to start WWII – to kill their own citizens. Zeitgeist has a sequel, Zeitgeist Addendum, and it has also started a movement of people , who believe that the world is not what it seems at first glance.

2. The Corporation

A film made by the writings of Joel Bakan in 2003 , this specific movie looks at the modern corporation as a single person, the way the law describes it, and applies the methods that psychiatrists use to observe people, to a corporation. This movie is full of frightening facts about the greedy and profit-hungry corporations, who will stop at nothing, not even the risk for people’s lives, to get more money. It also describes how, according to statistics, only a few corporations will own the entire genetic history of humanity over a few years.

3. Bowling for Columbine

Michael Moore’s Bowling for Columbine was filmed shortly after the incident in ColumbineHigh School, one of the first school mass-murders done by two students which killed 12 students and one teacher. The movie deals with gun control in the United States, and how most of the laws about guns are either dysfunctional or not executed properly. It’s very interesting how the movies showed the flaws of the system , which wasn’t fixed, and examples of that include the Virginia Tech Massacre, with 33 killed.

4. Helvetica

This movie by Gary Hustwit, made in 2007 , shows an aspect of our daily life that most of us never even thought about – the importance of typefaces , or fonts. It tells the story of one of the most used typefaces in history – Helvetica, and generally describes what hides behind a typeface, how it is designed to facilitate easier reading and recognition, how it can describe emotional status or convey a message not only through the meaning of the words, but merely through the way it looks

5. Metal – A headbanger’s journey

This movie, made by Canadian anthropologist Sam Dunn that traces the origin of heavy metal, its history as a subculture and the most defining traits of its fans which make it what it is – a genre for those who want an alternative. The movie also traces the prosecutions by various parental organizations around the world, and the public disapproval of metal music.

Some of those movies can make you change your point of view, others can make you think more deeply about certain matters. But one thing is certainly true – you won’t feel the same way after watching them, especially if you have HDTV.
